Chola to Doctora

Tina Torres

At the Sacramento K-16 Collaborative, we are driven by our passions and, for some of us, by lived experiences. Our most recent initiative, the Comebacker Campaign, focuses on encouraging and supporting individuals to return to school—because it’s never too late to complete your degree. The campaign particularly emphasizes reaching men of color and individuals from BIPOC communities.

One story that stands out in our campaign is that of Tina Torres, EdD, the Director of the Sacramento K-16 Collaborative at Sac State. Tina’s success is especially meaningful because it didn’t begin with access to resources or support during high school. In fact, Tina didn’t attend college until she was 30 years old. By then, she was married with children, working full-time, and balancing the challenges of everyday life. It took her eight years to complete her bachelor’s degree.

Growing up, Tina had no expectations that she could attend college or make it out of her neighborhood. In her community, the idea of pursuing higher education wasn’t often seen as a realistic path. There were many who doubted her, but she was determined to prove them wrong, no matter how long it took. She not only earned her bachelor’s degree but also went on to earn a Doctor of Education (EdD).

Today, as Director of the K-16 Collaborative at Sac State, Tina is working to ensure that others—especially adult learners like herself—have access to opportunities for success. One of the key efforts is the Hornet Attain! Program, which helps working-age adults who left Sacramento State before graduating, to return and finish their degree. The program provides adult-friendly advising, understanding the complex balancing act of work, family, and financial obligations. Advisors offer one-on-one support, helping students navigate the path back to Sac State and achieve both personal and professional goals.

Tina’s work in the K-16 Collaborative is very personal to her, in which she left her 20-year career to start something new.

“The work we’re doing at K-16 is impactful—not just for students, but for the community, for families. And for me, that’s very dear to my heart.”

– Tina Torres, EdD

Tina’s journey from “Chola to Doctora” serves as a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to make a comeback, and that higher education can transform not only individuals, but entire communities.
