Comebacker Spotlight: Raul Teodoro

Raul Teodoro

We are continually inspired by the stories of adult learners who overcome challenges, persist through setbacks, and achieve their educational goals. One such story comes from Raul Teodoro, a current master’s student at Sacramento State whose journey is a powerful testament to resilience, family motivation, and the importance of welcoming pathways back to higher education.

Raul’s academic path began back in 2000. After years of hard work and determination, he earned his bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from CSU Dominguez Hills in 2020—a major milestone as both an adult learner and a first-generation college student. But Raul’s journey didn’t stop there. He is now pursuing a master’s degree in history at Sac State, continuing to grow both personally and academically.

When we asked Raul what his early college experience was like, he shared candidly that he struggled to understand the purpose of a degree and what it could truly offer him. He came close to finishing, but stepped away from school just shy of completing his final credits. Still, he always knew he wanted to return.

What ultimately brought him back? His family. Raul shared that the thought of his children having two parents with college degrees was his biggest motivation. That vision of educational achievement within his family became the driving force behind his decision to return and complete what he started.

We asked Raul what might have helped during his time away from school—whether outreach from the college or clearer information about how close he was to earning a degree might have made a difference. His answer was a resounding yes: knowing what resources were available and feeling welcomed back could have encouraged him to return much sooner.

Raul’s advice for others who are considering going back to school?

“Don’t be ashamed. Setbacks are not a reason to stop—setbacks are going to happen in everything we do. Those setbacks are just a learning experience.”
