About this project
The Career Ready Veterans project assists veterans in the K–16 Sacramento Collaborative region in transferring to four-year colleges and preparing for careers. A counselor position, supported by the Collaborative, focuses on building partnerships with community colleges to strengthen outreach and transition services for veteran students. Efforts to build infrastructure for credit for prior learning (CPL) and emphasize career outcomes provide a clear pathway to earning a bachelor’s degree and securing post-graduation employment.
Budget cutbacks at the CSU and the cancellation of Developing Hispanic Serving Institution (DHSI) grants from the Department of Education have negatively impacted the launch and caused delays in implementation. Hiring freezes have prevented the project from hiring the Coordinator position that will lead implementation of project objectives. We are coordinating with the Career Center to have one of their staff, currently funded with DHSI funds, fill the Coordinator position later this academic year.
Our Veteran Success Center is preparing for the onboarding of the Coordinator, and a graduate student and undergraduate students will support the Coordinator and project objectives. Workshops are currently being developed, and data on veteran needs is being collected through a comprehensive needs survey.
